从这两个学校的专业设置来看，有共通之处也有些许差别，推而广之，每个学校教育学的专业设置虽然不尽相同，例如哥伦比亚大学的专业设置就相当丰富（详见教育学章节后附的哥伦比亚大学教育学专业分支清单），但是却有很大的相通之处，总体来说，从大的方面来分类，我们可以将教育学主要分为以下三个大方面：
